2018 has been a quiet year for the Italian large-scale solar industry. However, 2019 promises to be different. The Italian government is expected to release a new renewable energy decree that will further set up the base for an annual multi-GW market. With the first auctions planned for early 2019, the Italian PV sector is ready to retake its position as one of Europe’s sunniest and biggest solar markets.
Italy, one of the earliest countries in Europe to reach market parity and with a 50 GW target for 2030, is now fully ready to take an influx of solar energy. As with any market parity (subsidy-free) country, many questions remain. The aim of this country report is to try to answer some of those questions by providing a comprehensive overview of the solar energy market in Italy, along with key insights into its regulatory framework, photovoltaic (PV) sector and the current challenges and opportunities for its solar industry.

Alberto Cuter has been involved in renewable energy since 2008. He served as Sales Director in Phoenix Solar and Heliosphera and joined Jinko Solar in 2010. He opened the Italian branch and developed the Italian market positioning Jinko as leader modules supplier in 2011 and 2012. In 2013 he was appointed as Sales Director of Emerging Markets (LATAM and MEA).
